How ToolGrade Scores Products
Every product we review receives a ToolGrade Score out of 100. Here's exactly how we calculate it.
Performance
Actual vs rated output under real-world load conditions, voltage or pressure stability, runtime efficiency. This is the most weighted category because a product that doesn't perform its core function well fails regardless of other attributes.
Value
Price-to-capability ratio within its price tier. We don't reward lowest price — we reward best return on investment. A $1,100 generator that outlasts three $400 generators scores well on value. A $700 unit with $400 capability scores poorly.
Build & Durability
Frame quality, engine or motor reputation, reported failure rates from owner reviews at significant usage hours, warranty terms, and manufacturer service reputation. Long-term durability matters more than first impressions.
Ease of Use
Starting reliability, control clarity, portability, fuel management, maintenance requirements. A product that works but requires an engineering degree to operate loses points here.
Features
Available outlets, safety features (CO shutoff, GFCI), connectivity (app monitoring, remote start), expandability (parallel capability), and display quality. Features matter — but they're secondary to the above.
